Has Google Smoked the DMOZ Web Directory?

It seems the largest and most influential directory on the web has been smoked by the mighty Google.

The SEO world is spinning from this shocking discovery. There seem to be two separate trains of conspiracy:

1) Google is sick of directories, and in particular the fact that DMOZ carries so much weight.

2) The 301 re-direct they did a few weeks ago has gone badly wrong.

It all seems a bit fishy to me.
